Western versus Alternative Medicine: What are the options when you are living with allergies and asthma?
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA: www.AAFA.org) Asthma affects more than 20 million Americans (approximately 1 in 15), and over 50% of asthma cases are related to allergies. Combined, more than 60 million Americans suffer from asthma or allergies. Western medicine provides a set of useful solutions for people with asthma. The most common are:
1. Fast-acting inhalers of short duration, has a bronchodilator to open the airways quickly when an asthma attack is underway. It is often referred to as rescue inhalers.
2. In recent years corticosteroid inhalers have become common conventional treatment. The Corticosteroids reduce inflammation effectively in the lungs and often are paired with a long-acting bronchodilator.
Moreover many inhalers for asthma and allergy specialists trying to identify different allergens with allergy testing. Then they often prescribe medications for allergies or injections to help reduce allergic reactions that can lead to lung inflammation and constriction of the airways.
Medicine Holistic approach of a naturopathic doctor for allergies and asthma
As a naturopathic doctor I have both personal and professional experience related with allergies and asthma. I have struggled with allergies and asthma since childhood and while he struck out nine different drugs to mange my symptoms? I firmly believe that Western medicine has much to offer, especially to handle emergency situations, but holistic medicine and natural treatments also have an important role to play.
Holistic Health Considerations
Asthma can have many underlying causes. Asthma is an inflammatory disease that affects the airways. The lungs have a greater amount of reactivity to stimuli that cause airway constriction and production mucus. Allergies are one of the most common triggers. In order to create a comprehensive health solution for asthma patients with allergies who must evaluate all internal and external environmental triggers.
First talk to the patient about potential external environmental triggers. Do you have sensitivity to dust mites, animal dander, mold, chemicals, etc? Even poor air quality can be a trigger. AAFA recently published its annual list of the Top 10 worst cities for asthma. Six out of ten are in the southeastern United States.
Next, assess the patient's internal environment. I examine the patient strong constitution. Believe that nutritional factors and hormonal balance, and whether the patient requires a detoxification of the body.
Naturopathic Treatments for Asthma and Allergy
Important nutrients are often deficient in people with asthma. Essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, are often needed to strengthen the respiratory system and body as a whole. Herbal medicines can also be recommended to remove mucus, reduce congestion and toning the lungs. In my holistic health and naturopathic practice also use electrodermal screening and identifying allergens to desensitize patients to them. This is an unusual treatment, but has excellent results. This natural treatment helps patients remove triggers like the fragrance of the allergies, seasonal allergies and allergies to mold.
Common food allergies associated with asthma
Many people do not know that living with allergies can make asthma symptoms worse and harder to handle. The most common food allergies are often triggers for children and adults with asthma. Electrodermal screening can also help identify allergies to common foods like wheat allergies, gluten allergies and allergies to milk. For this reason, as a naturopathic doctor, I place high value on the relationship between asthma and nutrition.
Allergies to dairy products and wheat has been shown to aggravate inflammation in susceptible individuals, which makes asthma symptoms worse. With proper nutrition, herbal medicine, desensitization allergy and supplements, people with asthma can see a great reduction in the number of asthma symptoms or attacks. This holistic health approach combined with conventional treatments can improve the quality of life, even for some of the more severe asthmatics.
