Bioidentical Hormones & Hormone Replacement Therapy

Is the effect REBELS good for the health of women?

Perhaps nothing has caused more buzz in the arena of women's health care then the whole on the latest natural bioidentical hormones - plant-based compound that some believe they can offer the traditional benefits of menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT), without any of the health risks - including breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

Adding more fuel to speculation: The celebrities like Suzanne Somers and most recently, Oprah Winfrey, who have stepped into the limelight to make a great case for bioidentical hormones - and thus foster a generation or more women to give them a chance.

Indeed, for these two Hollywood legends - rainbow of aging and now many girls more regular - it is clear that the pot of gold at the end of the anti-is, in fact, a bucket of bioidentical hormones!

Indeed, some experts - as Wulf Utian, MD, executive director of the North American Menopause Society - readily bioidentical hormones believe can be as risky as any form of hormone replacement therapy. "The claims safety are entirely without merit, "he says.

But others, like New York, the doctor Erika Schwartz, MD believe otherwise. "When you give bioidentical a supplement to what the body produces, the body knows how to use it for best advantage possible, "he says.

So where is the truth?

A new facet of the story

While doctors, both traditional and "natural" has reached at equal on both sides of this controversy, the treatment, as a journalist who has covered - and followed - this question in women's health over 20 years, one aspect the controversy over the treatment I have not heard addressed or discussed by anyone, that is, whether or not to inflate its body with any type of reproductive hormones in a time when nature decides which should decrease, you can always give a positive result - even if those hormones come from Mother Nature?

Certainly, if we look at what science has to say about the deadly diseases related to hormonal stimulation, it seems clear the problems are inherent. For example, the fact well known that women with an early onset of their menstrual cycle or continue to menstruate at age 50 are at increased risk of estrogen-sensitive cancers - apparently, because they spend more years under the influence of estrogen stimulation themselves.

The very high risk profile applies to women who have never had children - apparently because of pregnancy to prevent ovulation, and all related estrogen ovarian stimulation that goes with it.

We also know that overweight women are at increased risk of estrogen-sensitive cancers, and doctors speculated that one reason is because the cells fat produce a form of "endogenous estrogen. The more fat cells you have, the more estrogen stimulation that experience in all its life - hence the greater your risk of some diseases.

So the question is really important to me, once a woman reaches a certain number of years of estrogen stimulation - including yours, natural estrogen stimulation - can be used hormone replacement therapy of any kind, whether or not bioidentical - increasing their risk of these diseases?

On the other hand, could the difference between taking hormones and suffer the consequences and actually not the total number of years each woman was exposed to estrogen stimulation of their own? And if this is a factor to consider when deciding whether or not hormone therapy of any type is suitable for any particular woman?

When you put the Nitty Gritty ... not have those answers!

"We are in many senses, in a non-area data - bio identical hormones have not been specifically studied in a randomized trial on any widespread level, and if you use that as a criterion, then it is true that we do not know if they are better or worse - than synthetic hormones, "says Marcie Richardson, MD, Clinical Instructor, Obstetrics and Gynecology From Harvard Medical School and Director of Consultation Service at Harvard Vanguard Menopause Medical Associates.

Indeed, it is important to remember that not long ago time everyone thought traditional synthetic HRT was the answer - to the Women's Health Intiative (WHI) proved otherwise.

And while hormones bioidentical indeed undergone some testing, the reality is that it was nowhere near the level of the WHI trials. More importantly, until that happens, can we really feel confident about a treatment decision - no matter who delivers the advice?

What lies ahead?

I hope that in the next 5 or even 10 years since I read that Suzanne Somers is facing another breast cancer - or that Oprah Winfrey was faced with the same - Or worse - fate. I love these two women - and the thought of losing or one is a loss too great to even consider.

At the same time, I can not help wondering how many women's lives may be lost because they blindly took the otherwise well-intentioned advice of those who, while some have found their own source of youth, could in fact be drowned in the wave of enthusiasm and
high hopes?

All I'm saying here is that if you are suffering with symptoms of menopause - either hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings or memory loss, or any of the other 101 things that can be bad during this time crazy life - you owe it to yourself to stop, think and consider what we know and not know it, and then consider all options before making a treatment option.

This could be the second thought that ultimately saves his life.
